• Gyeongui Line 경의선
Do you know that it was possible to travel to Europe through North Korea 북한 by train before? Gyeongui Line Railway 경의선, built in in the early 20th century, connected South and North Korea and it was linked to China, Russia and Europe. But the trains to North Korea has stopped operating since the Korean war 한국전쟁.

I went to Gyeongui Line Forest Park 경의선 숲길 where Gyeongui Line used to run through. It has been transformed into a beautiful park since the railway went underground. I found some parts of the railway, which has been preserved to commemorate the railway, while walking around the park and imagined traveling to Europe from here via North Korea by train.

• Where Hongdae 홍대 indie culture was born.
I stopped by ttaeng ttaeng street 땡땡거리. It is named after the sound of the bell (땡땡) that rang at the railroad when a train was approaching. The interesting thing about this street is Hongdae indie culture started here. After the railway went underground and before the park was built, this area was kind of empty and abandoned. But it attracted indie bands and artists who were looking for inexpensive places to live and perform. That’s how the hongdae indie culture took off, since then, Hongdae has become famous for indie culture and art. Now, Hongdae is very commercialized that you see lots of fancy bars and clubs, so the rent has gone up a lot, many artists have moved to cheaper areas. But it still plays an important role in indie culture and art.

• Bookstreet 책거리
Gyeongui Line Forest Park is divided into several parts by roads. There is the Bookstreet where the second part begins. Train-shaped containers are there on the streets. Each container has different books for different topics like travel, kids and art. Tables and chairs are ready in the container, so you can pick up some books and read in the container. On the book street, variety of events like book fairs, lectures and talks with authors are held regularly. It is a great place for book lovers.
