Starting at the Nordhafen, where the Spree flows calmly through the cityscape, one is greeted by the sight of old brick buildings that bear witness to Moabit's industrial heritage. These structures, some of them protected landmarks, date back to a time when Berlin was rapidly expanding and Moabit became a center of industry and technology. Large factory halls, former power stations, and warehouses line the riverbanks, many built in the characteristic brick architecture of the industrial age—red-brown, solid, with rounded arches and chimneys.
The path continues past relics like the former AEG factory grounds, which once played a central role in industrial Berlin. Today, these sites house start-ups, studios, event spaces, and cultural initiatives. The contrast between the rough, historical masonry and its new uses is a defining feature of this walk: here, tradition meets transformation.
Further downstream—passing the Westhafen, Berlin’s largest inland port—the atmosphere of the former working-class district remains palpable. Cranes, railway tracks, and old rail connections still hint at a time when goods from across Europe were handled here. While the port is still a functioning logistics hub, change is underway here as well: new uses are moving in, green spaces are being created, and walking paths along the river are being expanded.
The Spree River serves not only as a geographic axis but also as a symbol of the flow of time—an element that shaped Moabit’s history and is now helping to shape its future. At the end of the walk, near the Gotzkowsky Bridge, the surroundings become quieter, with cafés, small parks, and benches inviting visitors to pause. Here, the blend of raw history and urban renewal is especially tangible—a perfect spot to end the walk while gazing out over the water.
