A Walk Around Bundesplatz – Discoveries Between City Life and Serenity
On a sunny morning, I decided to take a short walk around Bundesplatz – that often-overlooked but heavily trafficked hub in Berlin-Wilmersdorf. At first glance, the area seems busy, even a bit uninviting. But for those who take the time to explore the nearby side streets, a surprisingly calm and almost idyllic world reveals itself.
I began my walk directly at Bundesplatz. The traffic hummed like a constant backdrop as I made my way toward Bundesallee. The architecture here is typical for the area: turn-of-the-century buildings with high windows and ornate facades, interspersed with some renovated post-war structures from the 1950s and 60s. But the real experience began when I turned left into Mainauer Straße.
Suddenly, the atmosphere changed. The hustle and bustle faded behind me, and the streets felt like small oases of calm. Nearly every house had a front garden, and many of them were true little works of art. In some, I saw meticulously trimmed boxwoods; in others, wild blooming perennials and climbing plants spilled over low fences. Lavender, lilacs, and roses filled the air with a soft scent, while bees buzzed busily from flower to flower.
I let myself wander, strolling through Offenbacher Straße and on to Kreuznacher Straße. Everywhere the same charming scene: well-maintained houses with lovingly designed front gardens, friendly facades, children's bicycles leaning on fences, a dog lazily dozing on a porch. It was clear that many residents take pride in their green entrances – a sharp contrast to the noise of the main square.
On Prinzregentenstraße, I sat on a small bench under a chestnut tree. The wind rustled gently through the leaves, and I heard the distant laughter of two schoolchildren. Not a car in sight. In the middle of the big city, I had found a peaceful, almost village-like stillness.
Eventually, I made my way back to the square via Bundesallee. Cars and buses were still rushing past, but now I saw them with different eyes. This walk had shown me that hidden behind the busy streets around Bundesplatz lies a side of Berlin you only discover when you pause, take a turn – and look closely.
Conclusion:A walk around Bundesplatz is worthwhile not only because of its central location but especially because of the charming side streets with their well-tended front gardens. Anyone looking for peace and a touch of greenery in the middle of the city will find it here – just a few steps away from the hustle and bustle.
