Over 4 days (16 & 17 Mar and 23 & 24 Mar 2019) French Dance company Le principe d'incertitude, led by Liz Santoro and Pierre Godard, and Singapore’s T.H.E. Second Company presented a five-hour performance that unfolded across National Gallery Singapore's public spaces.
"Learning" is the first initiative National Gallery Singapore’s programme, "Performing Spaces", which conceives of space as a living organism that creates encounters between performers and the public.

ABOUT "LEARNING"
Exploring the links between movement and language, artists Liz Santoro and Pierre Godard are trained in neuroscience and applied mathematics respectively, and have collaborated on choreographic projects for several years. In 2016, they imagined For Claude Shannon, a creation that used grammatical dependencies between the words of a statement by computer science pioneer Claude Shannon. This sentence makes it possible to extract a linguistic structure, which in turn generates inexhaustible possibilities of choreographic sequences.
Each time this piece is performed, the dancers assemble a new choreographic score, randomly generated from twenty-four "atoms" of arm and leg movements. Mutual listening between dancers, their ability to exchange information, and the mechanisms of transmission and learning are at the heart of this work.
For the spaces of the National Gallery of Singapore, the artists proposed an extension of this work, by inviting visitors to attend this complex learning process, usually invisible to the public. Sharing in a performative form this moment of intimacy and high concentration, the dancers are dispersed in the museum's galleries and then gather, blurring the boundaries between process and representation.
"Learning" was realised by Santoro and Godard as the inaugural commission for the National Gallery Singapore's "Performing Spaces" in collaboration with Le principe d' incertitude, T.H.E. Dance Company and T.H.E. Second Dance Company on 16, 17, 23 & 24 March 2019. Over a 5 hour duration, 15 dancers moved across the 2 buildings of the Gallery.
"Performing Spaces" is an artistic programme that enlivens the spaces of National Gallery Singapore through site-specific performances. It creates opportunities for the audience to experience the performing arts in intimate and unexpected ways.
This programme was made possible by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, and the Tote Board Group which comprises the Tote Board, Singapore Pools and Singapore Turf Club.
