France - Chirac's Presidential Inauguration

Jacques Chirac was inaugurated as French President at the Elysee
presidential palace in Paris on Wednesday (17/5). In his anaugural
address Chirac said he would fight to restore France's social
cohesion and overcome mass unemployment, which currently stands at
12.2 percent. The inaguration ceremony was attended by French
Prime Minister Edouard Balladur--who had run for the presidency
himself--Foreign Minister Alain Juppe, and the ailing Mitterrand.
