1.) The title Evaluating the Brain Disease Model of Addiction is a misnomer—this is a challenge/critique, not an evaluation. Moreover, the title centers the book around the model it is trying to refute.

2.) The volume is built on critiques of BDMA. Bruce Alexander’s two single-authored chapters (including the last, 44th chapter) are exceptions in presenting a variant social-cultural-experiential model.

3.) An alternative model must go beyond substance use in defining addiction so as to challenge BDMA’s drug-neuroscience basis steeped in antidrug mythology.

4.) Two other chapters in the volume are actually brain models—one (trauma) is itself a BDMA, the other (Marc Lewis’s) a reductive antisease brain model—both of which are anti-drug and pro-abstinence.

5.) The book doesn't include anti-disease harm reduction and motivational therapies—these didn’t originate in the drug field and Marlatt and Miller don’t address BDMA; thus the book fails to adequately acknowledge harm reduction.

6.) The focus on MDMA instead of the “disease theory” is an attempt to sidestep the easily provoked ire of 12-step disease-abstinence supporters.

7.) The volume thus fails to note BDMA’s essential commonalities with AA’s disease theory: both presuppose an inherent, life-long, uncontrollable condition resulting from substance use.

8.) The book includes no original BDMA content—BDMA’s backers felt no need to participate since BDMA’s dominance is unquestioned despite its long failure to improve drug and addiction problems.

9.) Despite its limitations, the volume is helpful as a reference to dispute the disease model and its policy, treatment, and science failures over many decades.
