We’ve entered a period when public health‘s number one message is that drinking is bad for you (there is “no safe level” of alcohol consumption). This is supposedly based on the WHO’s Global Burden of Disease Study. Yet the latest version of that study — the largest study (by far) ever conducted of the consequences of drinking — found that, worldwide, drinkers live longer with fewer disabilities than abstainers. This effect is multiplied to a considerable degree for older drinkers, male and female.
What gives that public health has reached this temperance consensus? What does it say about public health and its messaging? And what would be the consequences — for individuals and society — of believing it? (Hint: people are more likely to die and be disabled.)
