Such a wonderful song and wonderful story! The main groove of this song is playing the first 1 ½ note on the first count and the second note on the second half of the 2nd count (for instance bars 9 and 10), followed by a melodic line such as in bars 11 and 12). In the Chorus the bassline is more rhythmic in character.

The bassline got some nice passing notes (as in bar 104 the G# note; or in bars 117-118 (A#/Bb)). And it’s got some really nice slides (for instance bar 23 and of course the breaks as in bars 40; 76, 78 and 80).

A wonderful song with a very supporting bassline; a clear main groove; melodic lines; slides and passing notes. If you like to play bass and focus on supporting the vocals and harmony, than this is a beautiful example of such an approach.

I couldn’t figure out whether Joe Macho or Tommy West plays bass on this song. If you know more about this: please let me know!

I play this song on a Fender Precision (USA1976) with flatwound strings. Standard tuning E A D G. No effects used except a bit compression and a pre-amp. Don’t forget to tune your bass just a little bit higher (A4 = 442 Hz).
