Chasing down a puck that's dumped into your zone can be an intimidating thing for a youth hockey player. You have opposing players bearing down on you, and not only are they behind you-- but so are all your passing options!
To make this situation more comfortable for youth hockey players, we've labeled the primary options, and in this video we go through them all in detail. This will not only help the players who are chasing the puck, but it will also help the backchecking forwards to anticipate where they need to go.
1. "Wheel!" -- a breakout where the puck-carrying defensemen carries it around the net, to hit the weakside wing.
2. "Turn it up!" - where the D turns it back up the strong side to his the strong side wing.
3. "Partner!" - where we execute a D-to-D pass to change the side of the puck.
We also cover some key concepts to the breakout:
Communicate
Pivot to present a good passing target from the inside out
Timing and Space
Don't just rim it around the boards!
Let me know if you have any questions!
