Black mothers in the U.S. are 3 to 4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications, yet 80 percent of maternal deaths are preventable. This vast disparity, the Black Maternal Health Gap, is the result of systemic failure and a lack of access to essential reproductive care— including maternity resources, obstetric providers, birth centers, and hospitals that offer obstetric services.
In this video of Where You Are Now, Erica Chidi, Doula and Health Educator, and Dr. Erica Cahill, Clinical Associate Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Stanford University, offer a practical and empowering guide to creating a birth plan and protecting your pregnancy, labor, and postpartum experience. Here, you will learn:
• How the Black Maternal Health Crisis affects pregnancy, labor, and postpartum care.
• How to advocate for your birth rights and protect your wellbeing.
• What to include in your birth plan.
• How to communicate with your doctor, midwife, or doula.
• Tips for building a supportive care team throughout pregnancy and postpartum.
• What to look out for in the postpartum recovery period.
This guide is not medical advice—please consult your healthcare provider for individualized care. But we hope it helps you feel seen, supported, and empowered to advocate for yourself throughout your pregnancy and birth.
