We know midwifery-led models of care change outcomes for families and communities. Why aren’t they resourced accordingly?
Kiki Jordan, Founder and Executive Director of Birthland Midwifery (https://www.birthlandmidwifery.com) and Tenesha Duncan, Founder and CEO of Orchid Capital Collective (https://www.orchidcapital.fund) dig into this question in Episode 8 of Make Shift Happen, connecting their personal journeys to movements for birth and reproductive justice, the well-known benefits of community-led care, and the ways philanthropy can—and must—move differently to resource this essential work.
Their conversation surfaces the dominant orientation of our philanthropic and medical systems toward financial returns and capital. Yet midwives so clearly steward and share capital that extends beyond dollars and cents: cultural, relational, community, and personal capital are what yield the strong outcomes, low intervention rates, and better experiences for birthing people. In honoring the fullness of their value, we can begin to meaningfully resource those who are giving birth to the future we all want and need.
