Suppose that you are trying to help someone who is in pain or who's having trouble not being overwhelmed by some awareness of their body. Why does it matter that the brain is making multiple maps of the body, of sensation, of how emotion projects onto that landscape?
Why does it matter? To know about this well, number one, because the brain is making multiple simultaneous maps of the body, we know that body awareness embodiment is not a single thing.
It's a team effort between different processes in the nervous system and each different map in the brain. Represents a different skill set for embodiment, something that you can separately work on is a person able to differentiate one sensation from a nearby sensation is a person able to contextualize their awareness of their body within a given task is a person able to separate the sensory from the autonomic, from the emotional, from the symbolic layers of their body awareness, or is it all Conjoined into one mass, which might make it harder to treat.
These are all important questions. If you want to help someone move better, feel better, be freer within their body awareness. It's not enough by the way, just to give someone imagery for their body or to say, focus on your breath. It's as likely to cause someone to be overwhelmed and in pain as it is. This is why it is so important for anyone working in physical medicine, in somatic psychology, in movement instruction, to understand a little bit about how the brain makes continuous maps of the body, and how those maps actually arise within the brain. Within contexts where there is 📍 emotional need, where there is a task orientation, where there is an evolving perception of the self within its environment, all of this is what we're focusing in on August 24th with myself and Ben Korta, check out the link below, as well as some of the amazing peer reviewed research we're going to be bringing into this dynamic and experiential class.
I'm so excited for you to join me and have a great week!
