John's Workshop Diary Bridgnorth Cliff Railway Closed 2020
In March of 2020 the owers of the Bridgnorth Cliff Railway had to close it for some maintenance to recondition the motor.
Originally the Cliff Railway was powered by a simple system using water and gravity. Between 1943 and 1944 the system was rebuilt to use electricity,
with an official re-opening on 9 May 1944 by Mayor T.C. Pembro
The Cliff Railway in Bridgnorth is a funicular railway that connects the high town of Bridgnorth with the low town. It is a popular tourist attraction and is considered one of the steepest inland railways in the country. The railway was built in the late 19th century and has been in operation ever since. It consists of two cars that are connected by a cable, with one car ascending and the other descending the steep slope. The cars are powered by a hydraulic system and can carry up to 50 passengers at a time. The journey from the high town to the low town takes about five minutes, and the views from the railway are stunning, especially on a clear day. If you are visiting Bridgnorth, a ride on the Cliff Railway is a must-do activity.
