Описание: Scout for Fruit Mummies before trimming your Trees in the orchard. This podcast explores the organic management of apple orchards, specifically focusing on the prevention of fungal infections like yellow monilia. A primary concern is the removal of "fruit mummies," which are shriveled, diseased apples that harbor spores and threaten the health of future harvests. Rather than relying on harsh synthetic chemicals, the source advocates for biodynamic practices, such as using seaweed compost and fermented herb sprays to encourage beneficial microorganisms. The narrative emphasizes a holistic approach where trees serve as vital habitats for insects rather than just sources of high-yield production.
By understanding how moisture and temperature influence spore dispersal, gardeners can better protect their fruit through careful pruning and sanitation. Ultimately, the text underscores the importance of gentle handling and proactive maintenance to maintain a balanced, chemical-free garden ecosystem.

Fruit mummies
We have previously talked about old fruit from last season, which can infect with various fungal diseases, and today Kesser and Steen are out in the apple orchard with the Nature and Innovation class, where they have been given a simple task - before the apple trees are pruned for real.
A lively discussion easily starts about how and how often you should prune your apple trees (that is also a topic we have already touched on). Because the arguments are very different.
If it is a teaching situation (like here) it can be educational to keep things simple. Some varieties need to be treated differently, are they young trees, older ones or a renovation, etc. And then comes the dangerous question: how much does it cost, should the workers be paid (for making mistakes) and do you use chemicals in the orchard (some thin the flowering with chemicals ..) / what quality of fruit do you want, should it be large apples, small ones for school children or mixed?

🌸🐝 At Oma's house, there are different good old apple varieties that taste very different. There is a very long season, and each apple can do something different in the kitchen, but ... in fact, the apple trees are mostly there for the insects!
That there is also some apple pie 🥧 and apple juice 🧃 that can be made into cider and vinegar is just a plus - but the trees are the garden's 🐞
That is why Oma has a somewhat different perspective - than "yield" (in many kg) and we probably don't need to mention that the trees are not soaked in boring chemicals, but they are given seaweed compost and then Kesser and Steen experiment with some fermented herbs, inspired by a Korean technique.

But today the main task is to remove any old fruit mummies - before the rain comes and tricks the release of fungal spores.
Some people want to appear as if they are working in a clinically clean operating room, but it is just at home in the backyard / a plantation 🦠 and young boys should not mess with dangerous chemicals 🧤😷🥽 so no thanks to that. The hypothesis is to reduce the risk of infection by “removing” the mummies from the tree - and no, there should be no vacuuming with a HEPA filter under the trees either.

The theory is that it must “rain”, but before the temperature is right for the fungi to establish themselves, when their spores jump around from the ground, into the air and swirl around invisibly and land on a good spot - and start the next generation.

If nature itself cannot do it, Oma sets up a sprinkler system with rainwater, added fermented herbs .. which is sprayed out just before and during flowering - this way beneficial microorganisms have the advantage in the tree crowns.

While Kesser listens intently to what Professor Hendricks explains, Steen stands with his mobile phone hidden behind his jacket and Google explains ..
