How to Grow Tomato Plants - Kesser and Steen’s Greenhouse Experiment. We follow two students, Kesser and Steen, as they utilize their free lection at school to begin a biology-based gardening project. Using recycled materials like kitchen roll tubes and egg trays, the pair creates budget-friendly planters to house heirloom tomato seeds. The podcast highlights sustainable practices, such as using homemade compost enriched with seaweed and opting for rehydrated seeds from previous harvests. Beyond the physical task, the story touches on a natural philosophy of plant resilience, suggesting that only the strongest seedlings should be nurtured to ensure a successful crop. By preparing their garden in February, the boys balance practical experimentation with the hope of a bountiful summer harvest.
First they cut a few cardboard tubes from a kitchen roll that Steen has collected over the last few months. You never know when you'll need some cheap little flower pots. The great thing about these cardboard tubes is that you decide the length that will be the height of your pots. And then you get a whole plant that you can easily transplant without disturbing the roots. Remember what we talked about earlier, that plants do better growing in small pots, and are moved to larger ones every now and then (when you see the roots coming out of the bottom). Take a look into the playlists!
Kesser has found some pots with some used homemade compost. It's crunchy and dusty, so Steen really feels like he's getting some work done. Steen loves fixing cars and machinery at the junkyard.
-“But for God's sake Kesser, can you really plant in soil that's drier than sand from the Sahara??” laughs Steen
“yes my friend, certainly, you just have to add a little water when you have filled the cardboard tube with the teaspoon, here” replies Kesser
Steen has a good eye for measurements - all the tubes are exactly the same height, as they are nicely placed in the egg tray, which holds them together, and acts as a drain.
Not that it matters much, but it has to look good, Steen thinks so his mother can be more easily convinced that it is perfectly fine to make your own plants and grow your own vegetables at home in the backyard.
Meanwhile Kesser chooses some seeds, soaks them in a little water, and prepares the signs. Normally he doesn't pay much attention to this - "it doesn't matter, what comes comes .. a tomato from tomato seeds, very simple" he jokes
"But if you want to trade with small plants it's probably a good idea to know what you have in stock" 😜
There are certainly many video wonders on SoMe who think you should do it their way .. and yes it can be smart to see what sprouts 🌱🪴 and how many, so you only spend time on those that work (are alive) - but Kesser has taken plenty of seeds, and made them ready - besides, they have a bit limited time in a free lection ..
There are seeds to put (sow) about 2 pcs. in each “chamber” and then you remove the weak plant ✂️ or you just plant them both next to each other ..
Remember that tomato plants grow almost like a vine .. and easily take root on the stem itself, if there is soil contact and when it gets to a stick (a trellis or bush) it goes up ..
In fact, one variety is a low bush plant that gets quite dense and it can just stand in a large flower pot as a decorative flower on the terrace. The other is a cherry type, which has a stand made of bamboo sticks set up like a tippy. But it will only be in a few months
