In a shocking turn of events, U.S. and Israeli forces struck targets across Iran Saturday. President Trump urged Iranian people to use the attacks as a spark for revolution and regime change.
"When we are finished, take over your government," he said in a video posted on social media. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed those sentiments in a statement of his own.
Attacks appeared to target the compound that houses Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has been supreme leader of Iran's theocratic regime since 1989. In response, Iran responded as they had threatened to—with missiles launched at Israel, then attacking U.S. military targets in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar.
While tensions have risen between the U.S. and Iran over Iran's nuclear program, a full-throated endorsement of regime change is a drastic escalation of President Trump's stated goals, and raises the prospect of extended conflict in the region, just a few years after finally extricating U.S. troops from another lengthy war in the Middle East.
