STORYLINE:
China and Sri Lanka on Tuesday signed a series of deals when Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa is visiting Beijing to mark the 50th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties, according to Xinhua, China's state-owned news agency.
Rajapaksa's visit comes on the day Tamil rebels shelled Sri Lankan army helicopters carrying a delegation of Western diplomats two of whom were slightly injured.
Also in Beijing, Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama condemned the Tamil rebels following the mortar attack.
The Tamil Tigers admitted firing the mortars but apologised for the incident, blaming the Sri Lankan military.
The helicopter used by US Ambassador Robert Blake and his Italian counterpart, Pio Mariani, had just landed in Batticaloa district on Tuesday when several mortars landed close to the aircraft, according to a Sri Lankan government minister accompanying them.
A small piece of shrapnel was removed from Mariani's head and he was later discharged, said a doctor at Batticaloa's government hospital.
Seven Sri Lankan security personnel on the ground were also wounded, according to the Sri Lankan Defence Ministry.
Eight agreements on economy, investment, movies, agriculture and eye corneas donation were signed after President Hu Jintao held one-hour talks with Rajapakse, said Xinhua.
In recent years, China and Sri Lanka have witnessed frequent high-level exchanges and increasing trade cooperation, said Hu, adding that the two countries have shared mutual understanding and support in international and regional affairs, added Xinhua.
Hu suggested the two countries work closely to finalise the large cooperative projects and projects aided by China, and deepen cooperation in such fields as infrastructure.
