Welcome to the Green Wasp Removal Youtube Channel! In this episode, we continue training and mentoring the Manchester University Wasp Team, as we are called to a local church courtyard where invasive European Paper Wasps (Polistes dominula) had built large nests underneath multiple benches in the courtyard. This obviously put anyone trying to sit on these benches at high risk for stings, so these nests had to go.
The team did an excellent job experimenting with some new field techniques and gear. They used a combination of CO2 gas and insect nets to tranquilize and collect all the live nests, and many adult wasps, that could be utilized for Venom Immunotherapy.
The gas was very effective at disorienting the wasps during collection to keep them from immediately scattering and flying away from the nest as we approached. Once the nest was contained by the gas rig, it was simple to transfer the wasps into transport containers where they would wake up a few minutes later.
We’ll show you how the team learned effective netting techniques and how to transfer the live wasps from the net to transport containers. This system can be tricky to learn and it takes some experience to get efficient with it, but the team did great, and by the time we left the courtyard all the wasps had been cleared.
Once the team cleared the courtyard, they moved to the church playground and they cleared the play structures of some native Paper Wasp nests that were collected for relocation.
So within the courtyard we saw only invasive species. But out on the playground we found only native wasp species, so hopefully the natives are holding their own as the invasive species expand their range.
Thanks for riding along with us. Enjoy the show!

Most of the wasps we collect are utilized for Venom Immunotherapy (VIT). VIT is a life-saving medical treatment in which patients with severe venom allergies receive a series of injections (containing wasp venom products) which ultimately desensitizes them as they gain immunity to wasp venom. The goal of the VIT process is to prevent venom-related medical emergencies before they can occur. The treatment normally results in life long immunity to wasp venom (or bee, ant, etc.) and has up to a 98% effectiveness rate! VIT offers an amazing improvement in the quality of life for allergy patients, and we highly recommend it to people who may need this treatment.
