Words don’t have weight — until they land.
And sometimes, they land hard enough to break things we can’t see.
In this episode of Culture In Proverbs, we look at how Yoruba and Korean wisdom understand the destructive power of speech: how a single rumor can break a reputation, how insults can corrode dignity, and how damage done through words rarely has an undo button.
The Yoruba proverb uses humor and crude imagery to point out a sad social reality — that some accusations can’t be disproven without humiliating yourself further. It teaches survival, not idealism.
The Korean proverb speaks with blunt clarity:
“The tongue has no bones but it breaks bones.”
Both cultures arrive at the same human insight:
words can destroy without ever touching the body.
They fracture social trust, dignity, relationships, mental health, and reputation — and there is often no clean path to repair.
So I leave you with a question:
What does your culture teach you about the destructive nature of speech?
About reputation, rumor, and words that cut deeper than hands?
Share your wisdom. I’m learning too — and in the next episode, we’ll keep exploring.
