Noise is not proof of competence — but our world often treats it as if it were.
In this episode of Culture In Proverbs, we look at what Yoruba and Korean wisdom say about false expertise, loud self-importance, and confidence without competence.
The Yoruba proverb speaks through humor and imagery:
“À ń pe gbẹ́nàgbẹ́nà, ẹyẹ àkókó ń yọjú.”
A carpenter is summoned, and the woodpecker shows up.
It warns against those who insert themselves where they don’t belong — mistaking similarity for qualification, sound for skill, confidence for mastery.
The Korean proverb approaches the same idea differently:
“빈 수레가 요란하다.”
An empty cart makes the most noise.
Here, noise becomes evidence of emptiness — a sign of instability, lack, and pretense. In both cultures, sound draws attention not to expertise, but to absence.
Together, these proverbs ask us to examine:
– Why loudness is often mistaken for competence
– Why humility is undervalued in modern culture
– How confidence without skill becomes a social hazard
So I leave you with a question:
What does your culture say about noise, false authority, and confidence without competence?
Share your insight — I’m learning too.
And in the next episode, we’ll keep exploring.
