This video was shot (spontaneously and unplanned) on September 12, 2021. Whilst walking around the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine, CA, I was struck by how gorgeous the site is...even though it's obviously surrounded by a sizable and very busy human city. There is far more biodiversity there than I was able to capture with this short video. This led me to ponder once again how vital it is for all living beings, for humans and other life to co-exist. Nature can and must be a part of our cities. There are deep benefits for all. We humans just need to get better at sharing the land with the greater-than-human world. And as this footage clearly shows: restoration WORKS. Restore the soil, water and plants...and the rest of the ecosystem will rebuild itself.
This site has considerable history, which unforunately I do not have time to go into in the course of this brief video. Some of the story, particularly the more recent events after colonization and the takeover of the land from indigenous peoples, can be found at https://seaandsageaudobon.org
