21st Century Normality - Poem By Asha loon
Posting about climate change then buying food in plastic bags.
Connecting 10 devices, complaining when it lags.
They say you should always be honest, so I cross my fingers when I tell a white lie.
Turning on the television screen to watch our country die.
Ocean levels rising as the fires eat the trees.
A victim crying out for help that nobody believes.
Hateful men wearing tuxedos
And lies crafted into a truth.
Constructed double standards
On how to spend your youth.
That tree that stood for a century,
Now a stump at the side of the road.
You can’t log into netflix,
You forgot your old passcode.
Unsure if it was nostalgia or just one of those fever dreams.
Millions made off of exploiting insecurities in teens.
Manic Pixie Dream Girls are all written by men.
Brutally rejected if you are not “one of them.”
Is it true that self awareness can drive someone insane?
Smoke burning your insides
And smoke filling your brain.
Wishing I could hide my brother from the internet.
Sometimes all we can remember is the very thing we long to forget.
Suddenly the road not taken seems more exciting than the one you chose.
You realize that nobody cares, yet it seems like everybody knows.
So go ahead, call me dramatic,
I’d rather be a freak than a fool.
Because apathy doesn’t look good on anyone
And revelations can be cruel.
Maybe in my next life I’ll be a nihilist
Or perhaps a river polluted by a nearby town.
But conclusions are never final,
And raison d'être is a noun.
