Shanklin played host to over 90 crews and 11 clubs as we hosted our annual Hants and Dorset Regatta.
The regatta has been rough in previous years, which made for some exciting rowing, both launching and racing! This year, it was no different, with difficult conditions across the whole course. Shanklin run a short regatta course from the old Shanklin pier stump to the 'Stinkpot' Groyne and back. This is in case the conditions are rough, which makes for some fast and interesting racing.
SSILB provides safety boat cover every year for the event, some six (6) hours plus of safety cover for the event, giving a fast response due to the conditions that the course details above and this year we dealt with two (2) incidents.
The first part of the video - A Southampton Rowing Ladies Team crew member suffered an injury whilst rowing, finishing the race, the team called the Lifeboat over for assistance, the lady had possibly suffered a hernia, the Lifeboat crew asked if the lady wanted to board the Lifeboat (with assistance), whilst an SSILB crew member spoke with the lady, the Coxswain made the choice to return the coastal rowing boat back to shore by the Lifeboat, to get further assistance, as the Lifeboat crew could not give first aid whilst the lady was still the vessel and was not considered an option - due to its size and unstable platform. With the confirmation, the vessel was very slowly taken back to shore, to the boat park area of the beach to shallower waters, where the Lifeboat Crew assisted in beaching the vessel with all on-board, the Lifeboat crew then assisted the lady to keep her comfortable until the events first aiders arrived and then returned to the Lifeboat to continue safety cover for the event.
second part of the video - A collision had occurred between two rowing vessels, Southampton Men's Team suffered a broken Oar in the collision and needed assistance getting back to shore, some 2000 yards from their location, SSILB arrived on scene, making sure everyone on board was well and then transferred all five (5) members of the team onto the Lifeboat. Once all Oars were secured within the rowing vessel, the Lifeboat crew held onto the vessel, the Lifeboat then took the vessel back to boat park area of the beach, where their team assisted the Lifeboat crew to recover the vessel back onto shore.
