Apache delivery to commence by 2024
The Indian ministry of defence had sanctioned the procurement of 39 AH-64 Apache attack helicopters from the U.S. IAF has procured 22 Apache in September 2015. India and the US signed another contract for the acquisition of six Apache for the Indian Army during US President Donald Trump’s visit to New Delhi. There has been delay in the deliveries of these due to the COVID pandemic and now scheduled to begin deliveries in early 2024.
Indian Army has also been pushing the case for 11 more Apaches. The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) has ordered a study on the number of armoured helicopters required which is expected to commence between November-December 2023. The call on additional Apaches would be taken once the study was complete.
Boeing’s Apache Capability
Apache AH-64E is the world’s most advanced multi-role, multi-mission combat helicopter. It is considered as a flying tank which can virtually take on any mission. The AH-64E features composite rotor blades which is designed to withstand hits from 23 mm anti-aircraft guns. The airframe is designed to withstand hits from guns of up to 12.7 mm caliber.
Each Apache can be armed with up to 16 anti-tank Hellfire missile, 76 Hydra 70mm rockets and a 30mm chain gun with 1200 rounds.
For self defense against hostile helicopters the Apache can carry up to two AIM-9 Sidewinder, four AIM-92 Stinger, or four Mistral air-to-air missiles. It can also carry two AGM-122 Sidearm air-to-ground anti-radiation missiles, that can target hostile radars.
When is Longbow radar needed?
The most distinctive feature of Apache is the Longbow radar. It is a fire control system for tracking and targeting vehicles. It gives the capability to fire AGM-114R Hellfire-2 anti-tank guided missiles in fire-and-forget mode.
Without this radar the Hellfire-2 missiles are launched in the line-of-sight manner. The radar can detect, classify and prioritize 12 targets simultaneously, and can see through the fog and smoke, that foils infra-red or TV sensors.
It is specifically designed to enable the Apache to engage enemy armor from concealment. If there are no Surface to air missile threat, then it’s basically deadweight. Taking the radar off saves weight, which increases speed and range. This is the reason why not all the Apaches of India are equipped with Longbow FCR.
