Silage Feeding: Quick & Clear Information
Silage feeding is the practice of feeding livestock (mainly cattle, buffalo, goats, and sheep) with fermented green fodder stored in airtight conditions. It preserves nutrients for use during fodder scarcity.
📌 What is Silage?
Silage is chopped green fodder (maize, sorghum, napier, oat, etc.) stored in a silo/pit where it ferments under anaerobic conditions.
This fermentation produces lactic acid, which preserves the fodder for long periods.
✨ Benefits of Silage Feeding
✔️ High nutrient value even after long storage
✔️ Available year-round—best for dry seasons
✔️ Improves milk production
✔️ Better digestibility for animals
✔️ Reduces feed cost
✔️ Less wastage compared to dry fodder
🐄 Suitable Animals
Dairy cows & buffalo
Goats & sheep (limited amounts)
Pregnant and lactating animals
📏 Feeding Rate
General recommendation:
Cattle/Buffalo: 15–20 kg per day
Goats/Sheep: 1–2 kg per day
Calves: 5–7 kg per day (after 3 months)
Feed along with concentrate & dry fodder for balanced nutrition.
🔸 How to Identify Good Silage
Good quality silage should be:
Yellowish-green or golden
Fruity, sweet smell (not foul or rotten)
pH around 3.5–4.5
Moist, but not too watery
⚠️ Precautions
Do not feed moldy or black silage
Introduce slowly (2–3 days for adaptation)
Provide clean drinking water
Mix with other feeds (avoid feeding silage alone)
