🎹 Tom Chang (Zhang Yusheng) “The Ocean / Mouth Is Not” × Sally Yeh “Walk Gracefully Once”
Piano Tribute to Tom Chang – Piano Cover Mix
On November 12, 1997, singer–songwriter Tom Chang passed away at the age of 31.
At that time, his tenth Mandarin album “Mouth Is Not (Duplicity)” (Kou Shi Xin Fei) had been out for less than a month —
a work often seen as his most mature creation, perfectly balancing art and commerce.
It later won the Golden Melody Award for Best Mandarin Album,
and even now, each song still feels timeless and full of soul.
Many wonder: If he had lived longer, how far could Mandarin pop have gone?
Tom Chang rose to fame almost instantly.
With classics like “My Future Is Not a Dream” and “Thinking of You Every Day,”
he became a beloved voice of the 1990s.
I still remember watching him in The Wolves of Seven Brothers —
his warm smile and clear, powerful tone left a deep impression.
Yet he was never content with being an idol.
He longed to make his own music.
After his service, he released The Zhang Yusheng Creative Album and Karaoke Live in Taipei: Me,
both admired by critics but modest in sales.
Following label advice, he recorded more accessible works like The Ocean, Still Friends,
and The Fish That Swims All Day.
Among them, “The Ocean” (1992) —
written by Chen Dali and Chen Xiunan, the same team behind Sally Yeh’s “Walk Gracefully Once” —
became a defining classic that revived his career.
Later, he boldly released the conceptual double EP “The Iran–Iraq War”:
Red Passion (songs by others) and White Talent (his own).
From then on, he skillfully moved between the market and his ideals,
gradually developing a creative depth that balanced both art and commerce.
In 1997, at his creative peak, he released Mouth Is Not (Duplicity).
Its title song fused rock power, exotic sound, and emotional depth,
marking a milestone in Mandarin pop history.
The title itself mirrors his inner struggle between idealism and reality.
While The Ocean brought fame, it also carried quiet solitude.
To me, Mouth Is Not (Duplicity) feels like the hidden shadow of The Ocean —
two reflections of one artistic soul,
his inner river finally merging into a vast, forgiving ocean.
On the 28th anniversary of his passing,
I recorded this piano piece that seamlessly weaves together “Mouth Is Not (Duplicity)” and “The Ocean”,
along with Sally Yeh’s “Walk Gracefully Once.”
Together, these three songs paint a portrait of Tom Chang’s life —
his struggle between dreams and reality,
and his legacy as a musician who lived freely, bravely, and sincerely.
Three piano lines flow and echo like tides.
Can you hear your own ocean within them?
Life is brief, like fireworks in the night —
so let’s live true to our hearts,
and walk gracefully once. ✨
