Located within Greater London, in the northwestern borough of the same name, is the town of Harrow.
The name 'Harrow' is derived from Old English 'hearg', meaning 'heathen temple', in reference to a pagan shrine which is believed to have stood at the spot now occupied by St Mary's Church. It was around this church, dating from the late 11th century, that the original settlement formed, about half a mile south of the town centre of today - what is now referred to as Harrow on the Hill.
In 1572 Harrow School was founded by local landowner John Lyon, under a Royal Charter of Queen Elizabeth I. This is a full-boarding, all-boys public school, and one of the most exclusive in the country. Its alumni include seven British Prime Ministers including Winston Churchill. In 1830 the sport of squash was invented here, or 'squasher' as it was originally known.
In 1837 Harrow & Wealdstone station opened. Wealdstone is the district just north of Harrow town centre, although at the time the area was mostly fields. Workers were drawn to the area by a number of factory openings, including Kodak and Whitefriars Glass. In 1880 Harrow-on-the-Hill station opened, initially as just 'Harrow', but renamed in 1894 - allegedly for marketing reasons rather than geographical accuracy, as it is in fact located in the town centre. With these transport links, along with the factory openings, Harrow experienced a surge in population.
Historically, Harrow was a part of the county of Middlesex up until 1965 at which point the ceremonial county of Greater London was formed. The town's name is shared with the borough to which it belongs - the London Borough of Harrow.
Famous people from Harrow include Roger Bannister, Ian Dury, Peter Andre and Dev Patel.
