The silsilat al-dhahab, or 'Golden Chain' of hadith narration, went through the Imams and was affirmed by Ahmad ibn Hanbal. It became commonly held by the time of Ahmad ibn Hanbal that reciting the names of the Golden Chain from Imam al-Ridha (as) up to the Prophet (s) could cure illnesses.
