Although road salt and other chloride-based deicers are vital tools for managing snow and ice, their use damages infrastructure, harms the environment, and pollutes water. Fortunately, there are a growing number of tools that can be used to maintain public safety while greatly reducing the amount of salt applied to our paved surfaces. Presenters in this video include:
Scott Kuykendall, Water Resources Specialist for McHenry County, will show how the use of road salt and other chemical deicers are polluting our water resources, impacting the environment, and damaging infrastructure. He will also introduce sensible salting practices that can maintain safety in winter while reducing pollution.
Hanna Miller, Watershed Project Manager for the Conservation Foundation, will share information about the exciting new opportunities they have developed with their Salt Smart Collaborative. The opportunities include the new “Salt Smart Certified” training program that teaches snow and ice management professionals how to use industry-proven Salt Smart practices that maintain safety on parking lots and sidewalks while reducing pollution and saving money. Hanna will also introduce their “Winter Chloride Watchers” that will show stakeholders how to collect chloride data from streams/ponds to improve our understanding of impacts from road salt in our watershed.
