Have you ever been misrepresented? Has someone claimed to know your heart, your motives, your reasons—without truly knowing? In Malachi 3:13–18, God confronts His people: “You have spoken arrogantly against me.” Their words were “hard” against Him—not mysterious, but unfair. Presumptuous. Certain about things they did not know.
Arrogance toward God doesn’t always sound loud or rebellious. Sometimes it sounds theological. Just ask Job’s friends—Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar—who presumed to explain God’s hidden purposes and ended up misrepresenting Him (Job 42:7). They defended God in a way that dishonored Him.
The people in Malachi said, “It is futile to serve God… evildoers prosper.” In other words: What do we get out of this? That’s the posture of pride—reducing God to a formula and judging Him by our outcomes.
But there is another group. “Those who feared the LORD talked with each other, and the LORD listened.” A scroll of remembrance was written. God sees. God hears. And on the day He acts, they will be His treasured possession.
In a culture that treats holy things casually, this message calls us back to reverent fear. There is a vast gulf between arrogance and awe.
Which voice will shape your life?
