Though a generator set can fulfill several different functions, there are three main generator duty classifications. These include standby, prime power and continuous. General definitions for these duty classifications are contained within the video. It is important to understand how a generator set will be used in an application because depending on the duty classification, the same generator set may have limits on the maximum loading conditions and number of hours it can be run at these loads. There are also recommendations on minimum loads as they relate to a unit's ability to reach correct operating temperatures and burn fuel efficiently. For example, Cummins recommends a generator be run at no less than 30 percent of its nameplate power rating.
The ISO-8528 standards provide limits on how long a generator should be operated according to duty class. Cummins Power Generation adopted these ratings in 2007. For example, a generator set being used in a standby application, the running time is not expected to exceed 200 hours per year, and the total number of hours at 100 percent of standby rating must not exceed 25 hours per year.
The focus of EPA ratings is on allowable emissions by generator set size and function.
