Gameplay of the boss Boss Sub-Zero in Midway/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks.
Boss Sub-Zero’s moves:
• Square: Auto-combo
• Triangle: Triple Uppercut
• Circle: Knock-Back Ice Smash
• R1+Square: Freeze
• R1+Triangle: Slide
• R1+Circle: Ground Freeze
• Square+Triangle: Spine Rip [Instant kill!]
• Triangle+Circle: Ice Uppercut
• Circle+Square: Overhead Kick
Boss Sub-Zero is insane. He has all three of regular Sub-Zero special moves, as well as a few other moves. He has a decent enough auto-combo, as well as a delayed knock-back smash attack, an overhead kick attack and a slightly delayed overhead kick. His best regular damaging attack is his triple uppercut, which is so powerful it can take off half the opponent’s health in one combo! It leaves him open to counter-attack if he misses, but it’s so good when successful that it’s still worth using.
However, something one ups it. For some reason, for some ridiculous reason, they decided to give Sub-Zero his spine rip fatality. As a regular special move. Presumably, this is during the parts where the player teams up with him, so it was never meant for regular use. And it’s easy to see why, because the thing, as you might suspect, is a goddamn insta-kill move. An instant kill move. In a beat-em-up. I mean, in a fighting game, or an action-adventure game, that’s bad enough. In a beat-em-up, a genre all about being outnumbered and surrounded, it’s absolutely hilarious. As with all boss throws Sub-Zero is invincible during it, meaning he can destroy most enemies at well, and all the other opponents can do is watch in shock and horror as a brightly-coloured ninja rips their heads off one by one. Truly, this is the Godfrey Ho film that never was. The only thing about this attack is that it doesn’t allow you to recover health after it’s performed, but given how good Boss Sub-Zero’s other moves are this hardly matters.
I may try to do a playthrough as Boss Sub-Zero at some point, to see if that Spine-Rip attack really is as impervious as it seems. I doubt it works on things like the flying enemies and bosses, but it would certainly be interesting to find out.
Next up, a video on the boss variant of our favorite Van Damme rip-off.
