A playthrough of the boss Dark Seid in the PS3 port of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe/MK vs. DC Universe.
Dark Seid is the other sub-boss of the game. It’s probably not too surprising, but he honestly seems like the one that they put the least effort into to me. He has five moves, two of which are his eye-lasers, and then he has the ones which Dark Kahn borrows too; Omega Knee (that rising knee attack), Omega Force (his leaping stomp) and Omega Tremor (his earthquake type attack). All perfectly good but, coupled with his very limited innate combos, it makes Dark Seid feel very limited on the whole, which this video probably shows a decent amount. Both bosses have a weird thing where they only have like some kind of pseudo-link-up between their normal and specials; you’ll see it here and in the Shao Kahn video, but when trying to link into specials from certain combos it looks as if it just links into it straightaway, but actually it doesn’t technically count as a combo and so the opponent is just able to block in between it, making for a pretty anti-climatic finish. Not a bad character and perfectly playable (not to mention iconic in the DC Universe, obviously), but you’re not really missing a whole lot by not playing as him either.
Obviously, as with Dahn I had to play through the DC Story to be able to use Dark Seid here. The DC story is a touch better than the MK one in my opinion, and they did a good job getting the essence of all the characters, even if it’s still very much just the characters saying “oh no, why is this happening, ahh I’m so angry I have to fight you, wait we need to stop fighting” for two hours or so.
In particular, I have to give a shoutout to the voice actor for Joker in this game in particular. Most of the voice actors does a pretty good job here, but he does an absolutely incredible job, getting the essence of Joker down to a tee, to the point I honestly thought it was Mark Hamill reprising his role until I looked it up later on.. Possibly my favourite bit is where, just to be stupidly meta, they have Joker yell out “KAHN” just to make a dumb little reference to Star Trek II, which I won’t lie actually did make me burst out laughing just because it was so unexpected in the moment (here: • Mortal Kombat vs. DC universe-Joker's KHAA... )
And that wraps it up for MK vs. DC. It’s…very okay, if just a touch off to me. The controls feel a bit stiff and you can get somewhat used to them, but those annoying minigames in particular are extremely annoying to me mid-match, and that coupled with the unforgiving AI and quite small roster made it a very mixed bag on the whole and, really, a bit forgotten nowadays as a result. Still, some interesting bosses at least, and there's always some fun to be had covering a relatively forgotten title, especially in an otherwise very popular series.
Up next, a little trip back to MK9 for the NPCs. See you then.
