Here is a recording from the 8th of October 2017 of John Furlong singing 'Father Nicholas Stafford' in the yard of the infamous Hawtry White of Clonganny House, Ballygarrett.
Hawtry White was a magistrate and yeoman from Ballygarrett during 1798 and was known locally as "The Priest Hunter" and by all accounts he was a deluded and bitter old fecker so it was great to be back in his yard singing a 1798 song. His initials adorn the brick wall above the heads of the crowd in this video.
This is not just any old 1798 song I must add though. Instead a rather fitting song, written by John about about a local priest and United Irishman called Fr. Nicholas Stafford from Blackwater, who was sheltered and nursed back to health by a Protestant family from outside Gorey called Cookes.
As you can hear from this clip, the local folklore still survives and it's said that the Cooke family will always have a 'white horse' in their yard for the good deed that they done some 200 years ago.
This was recorded as part of a larger placed based project and walk series I undertook in my home village of Ballygarrett over a number of years.
