Ronan Berry (Rónán Ó Béara) singing ‘The Vivandeer’ in the church in Ballygarrett at the start of a series of walking tours by Michael Fortune of Ballygarrett, Co. Wexford on the 15th of October 2017.
The song tells the story of the Vivandeer which ran aground on the Blackwater Bank in 1885 and this song was collected by Fr. Joseph Ranson back in 1937 from Tom Murray of Blackwater.
People along the coast were very resourceful and its worth noting that all the seating and paneling in the church in Ballygarrett were made from the timber of another ship, The Irrawaddy which was wrecked near Cahore in 1857.
Fr. Ranson got many songs in this locality and his brother Bob was the Parish Priest in Ballygarrett and is buried just feet away from where Ronan was singing.
Recorded and Produced by Michael Fortune.
