If given the choice between class 1's and shortline railfanning, I always prefer chasing shortline operation rather than something out on the mainline. While the Class 1's have been going to extreme lengths to cut costs and please shareholders, shortlines have had to carry on with the basic job of serving the customer despite numerous challenges the industry has experienced over the last few years.
I'd be hard-pressed to think of a better shortline to railfan, at least in Canada, than the OSR. A good example of branchline railroad is the railway's turn job to Tillsonburg, a few miles south of their shop at Salford. End-cab switchers, carload railroading, and an easy chase, what more could a railfan ask for?!
In June of 2021 I spent a warm summer morning following the job as they made their way south to Tillsonburg, a town that once had three railways (CN, CP, NYC/PC/Conrail) and five stations. Today, GIO rail runs the ex-CN Cayuga spur east-west through town and OSR operates the north-south ex-CP Port Burwell spur. The job's main customer is Future Transfer whose bulk liquid transloading operation provides enough business to warrant two or three switches per week. Starting at Salford, we see some of the road's other power including the terrific pair of FP9A's, and then follow the job south where the switching will take pretty much all morning to complete. If you like end-cab EMD's or switching, this video is for you!
As always, thank you for watching!
