After the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the harbor became one of the most powerful underwater memorial landscapes on Earth, where WWII shipwrecks still sit as silent evidence of the opening day of America’s Pacific War. In this video, we explore the stories behind three iconic sites: the USS Arizona shipwreck beneath the USS Arizona Memorial, the often-overlooked USS Utah wreck beside Ford Island, and the Japanese midget submarine destroyed in the first moments of the battle after USS Ward fired what’s widely recognized as America’s first shots of World War II in the Pacific. We break down how each vessel was hit and how they sank, what survivors and official records tell us about those chaotic minutes, and why these wrecks are treated as protected war graves and historic sites. Then we shift into modern underwater archaeology and deep-sea exploration, including how researchers located the Ward-sunk midget submarine in 2002 in deep water outside Pearl Harbor, and what these wrecks still reveal today about the attack, the aftermath, and the long work of remembrance.
