In July 1945, the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA-35) completed one of the most secret missions of World War II: delivering key components of the atomic bomb “Little Boy” to Tinian Island.
Days later, she was torpedoed in the Philippine Sea, vanishing with no distress call, no escort, and no search party dispatched, leading to the deadliest disaster in U.S. Navy history and a harrowing days-long struggle for survival against exposure, dehydration, and sharks.
In this video, we trace the ship’s classified atomic mission, the tragic sinking, and the bureaucratic failures that left hundreds of sailors abandoned at sea, before following the 2017 deep-sea expedition led by Paul Allen’s research vessel Petrel that finally located the wreck 18,000 feet down, bringing long-awaited answers, closure, and a lasting memorial to the 879 men who never came home.
