Today we welcome guest preacher Doug Cunningham, author of Beyond the White Church: Disrupting Racism, Rebuilding Faith Community (2025). Doug brings a powerful witness shaped by more than forty years of ministry across cultures and communities.
His journey began as a missionary in the Philippines during the resistance movement that helped end the Marcos dictatorship, where he first became deeply aware of how injustice and faith intersect. Over the decades, Doug has served in white, multiracial, and Black United Methodist congregations in Baltimore and New York, including founding New Day Church in the Bronx—a community committed to crossing boundaries of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and age, and confronting injustice with the compassion and abundance of God.
Doug also serves on the James Lawson Anti-Racism Commission (JLARC), established through the work of Black Methodists for Church Renewal in New York. His ministry invites the church to honest reflection, courageous discipleship, and faithful action rooted in Christ’s call to love boldly.
