Paalakura Pappu (Spinach and Moong Dal)
Ingredients:
Moong dal (Pongal dal) – 1/3 cup
Spinach (Palak) – in proportion to the dal
Onion – 1/2, cut into large chunks
Green chilies – 3-4
Turmeric powder – a pinch
Sesame oil – 1 tsp
Rock salt – to taste
For Tadka :
Ghee – 1 tbsp
Hing – a pinch
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
Chana dal – 1/2 tsp
Dry red chilies – 2, broken
Garlic – 2 cloves, slightly mashed
Curry leaves – 2 stems
Method:
1. Soak the moong dal in water for 1 hour. (If short on time, you can use it without soaking).
2. In a mud pot (or a regular pan), add the soaked moong dal, onions, green chilies, turmeric powder, and sesame oil. Boil on medium flame for 10-15 minutes.
3. When the dal is about halfway cooked, add the spinach. Continue to cook until the dal and spinach are tender.
4. Add rock salt once the dal and spinach are fully cooked.
5. In a small pan, heat ghee. Add hing, mustard seeds, urad dal, chana dal, red chilies, mashed garlic, and curry leaves. Let everything sizzle until the seeds and dals turn golden.
6. Pour the tadka over the cooked dal mixture. Stir well and serve hot.
Tip- Add salt only after the dal and spinach are cooked. Add spinach only when the dal is half cooked.
