"One day, I'm going to paint in there," Joseph Montalvo remembers thinking about the parking lot adjacent to the American Hotel in downtown L.A. Montalvo, known as Nuke of the UTI Crew, got his chance in the early 1990s, when his crew became the caretakers of what taggers call “Al’s Bar’s parking lot.” For years, he has overseen the upkeep of the yard, and has worked closely with other artists in the creation of epic murals on the south wall of the hotel.
Montalvo grew up in Boyle Heights, surrounded by a wealth of Chicano culture and murals. In his teens, he knew graffiti art was what he wanted to do with his life, and as a young man, he traveled to Mexico with Earth Crew, sharing a room with legendary graffiti writer Sk8 of CBS Crew. Montalvo was interviewed in January and April 2014 for “Tales of the American,” a documentary feature about the Arts District, Al’s Bar and the American Hotel.
Filmmakers Pamela Wilson and Stephen Seemayer interviewed more than a hundred artists, musicians, writers and others who lived, worked and partied in and around the American Hotel. They are periodically releasing (in alphabetical order) edited versions of these interviews on this channel.
