Alberto Miyares moved to Downtown Los Angeles in 1987 and quickly harnessed his powers of ingenuity, industriousness and audacity to become a force behind the development of the Arts District. His Clubhouse — opened across the street from Al’s Bar, “so people could have somewhere else to go” — was a gallery and speakeasy, with, oh yeah!, an indoor “gun booth,” where patrons could discharge weapons safely (if illegally) and take home a nifty souvenir.
In 1995, Miyares and his friends created the “Flame-Throwing Espresso Rod,” an old truck — equipped with a coffee machine — that shot 20-foot flames out the back. The night he drove it around Traction Avenue is a party that lives in infamy among those that were there. Miyares now splits his time between L.A. and a desert home in Landers, CA. He was interviewed in March 2014 for “Tales of the American,” a documentary feature about the Arts District, Al’s Bar and the American Hotel.
Filmmakers Pamela Wilson and Stephen Seemayer interviewed more than a hundred artists, musicians, writers and others who lived, worked and partied in and around the American Hotel. They are periodically releasing (in alphabetical order) edited versions of these interviews on this channel.
