In some sense, the SMO Open is the finale Math Olympiad, so it can test pretty much anything. That means it's a good strategy to focus on problems which are effectively Junior/Senior problems in disguise.
Apart from these, I discuss a few 'Open-specific' ideas which can be conveyed using a few examples. But these are far from exhaustive - it's the SMO Open, after all!
