When it comes to targeting trout at a lake that I'm unfamiliar with (in terms of the hotspots), I use lures to search for them. Lures are the best way to scout for schooling trout because of how much ground and distance you can cover in a short amount of time in comparison to jigs and bait. If you don't have time to look for them, just go to where everyone else is fishing. Chances are high that that's where the fish may be.
