The District Chief Executive for Atiwa East, Owusu Ntim Ernest, has launched a massive land reclamation exercise to restore lands destroyed by small-scale and illegal mining - galamsey.
Speaking during a media tour of reclaimed sites, the DCE revealed that every degraded pit in the district has been traced to a miner, and those responsible are being compelled to return and reclaim the land before any prosecution.
“Virtually every pit has a name attached to it. Before prosecution, they must correct the damage they caused to the environment,” he said.
A district task force—approved by the General Assembly, Security Council, and Management—is identifying destroyed lands, retrieving miners’ details including Ghana Card information, and enforcing compliance.
The initiative aims to make Atiwa East the first district in Ghana to fully reclaim galamsey-degraded lands, while promoting sustainable mining and environmental protection.
