I wanted to test making a room in Unity with 3D character and pre-rendered background à la PS1 era games (Final Fantasy, Resident Evil etc.) Background consists of separate image planes, the character is a 3D model that runs around on a invisible area where there are collisions to match the furniture.
Making this ended up being much more difficult than I anticipated. I'm a beginner when it comes to Unity, so my teacher helped me in the end and wrote a script to help match the front image planes to camera view and depth, so it will look like the character is going behind and in front of the objects. At first I used two different camera, one to render the character and one isometric camera to render the images, but turned out that way couldn't make the character go both behind and in front of objects. I tried using depth maps but due to my unfamiliarity with Unity, I couldn't get it to work.
