ABSTRACT
Contemporary sensitivity to discrimination compels us to re-examine the great figures of the Western canon, including Immanuel Kant, and their relation to issues such as racism. Leading Kant scholar Prof. Huaping Lu-Adler (Georgetown University) shows how Kant’s raciology—and, crucially, his philosophical indifference to the racism of his day—helped normalise an intellectual stance in which racial injustice could be ignored rather than opposed. Drawing on that diagnosis and on her own intellectual journey, she explores how scholars today can confront this legacy and foster a broader, sustainable anti-racist practice.
