ABSTRACT
In an age obsessed with authentic self-expression, philosopher and film scholar Prof. Todd McGowan (University of Vermont) argues that alienation is not a social ill to be cured but the very precondition of the public sphere. Expanding on his book "Embracing Alienation," he shows how the inner distance from our identities creates a universal bond that enables solidarity across tribal markers and social divides, paving the way for genuinely emancipatory politics.
