This hike was chalk full of Bison sightings. The closest encounter was a male in rut right on the trail as I crested a hill, so I chose a lengthy detour around him. He kept his eyes on me until I was out of sight. I made my way up the plateau and eventually ran into so many Bison on the trail I couldn’t safely navigate around them so I turned around. It was a beautiful fall day in the park. Thanks for coming along!
The Buffalo Plateau hike is in northern Yellowstone National Park and leaves from the Hellroaring Trailhead. The elevation at the trailhead is 6,500 feet and the elevation of nearby Hellroaring Peak is 8,340 feet.
You can find more info on this trailhead below. This trail links up to many others and can be combined to create a through hike or an overnight loop.
