Working with material like this expands your ears and your vision of the fingerboard. It’s a slow integration that can take years. But if you stay with it—perseverance, dedication, and a steady return—you gradually become the player you’ve always wanted to be.
And I think it helps to practice from what you genuinely love. Focus in on what moves you, plant those seeds in your daily work, and let those musical loves be shaped by your own sensibility until they come back out as your playing and your creation.
This video looks at a simple, clear formula—sixths and sevenths—and how it maps onto the fingerboard in a readily comprehensible way. We’re in the key of no sharps and no flats. We begin with the interval of a sixth. The upper note of the sixth ascends, and then the sixths become sevenths. I hope the demonstration makes the process clear and repeatable.
